Free Day with an Aussie Family

The last day on Fraser Island, our tour guides took us on a walk through the forest, where we got a chance to jump from an 8m cliff next to a waterfall into a small pool of water. The water was freezing, but it was worth it! When we arrived back to Brisbane, we all split a large pot of penne alfredo, which came out to 2$ a person (not bad for a meal here!). On Sunday, we had a free day so a bunch of us went with a student’s friend who lives here in Brisbane to Somerset Lake to go tubing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, knee-boarding, and lay under the hot Australian sun. A few students got to see a wild Koala by the lake, despite the absence of its usual habitat. We had lunch at the lake and stayed there until sunset when we got dropped off at the hotel. Earlier in the day we stopped at a McDonalds that was just finished as it had to be rebuilt due to flood damage. I was told that particular McDonalds was completely submerged by flood waters, people couldn’t even see the roof! It was really great to spend a day with an Australian family because I got to see what living here is like from a local’s perspective. Everyone is very laid back here and they seem to enjoy meeting new people. A long day of water sports, fresh air and sun wiped us all out so it was a relatively early night for all of us!
